Well again, we all know that I dislike beef with a passion. I don’t know why, always have! But the urges for a really good burger do not cease! Thank you ground turkey, for making this possible! My only beef (ha, you see what I did there!) with ground turkey, is that it tends to taste like nothing. If you season the meat correctly, they can be really delicious. It’s fun to play around with, but these particular turkey burgers have a little bit of a kick thanks to jalapeño and a sweet and spicy sauce!
Here’s the recipe! Again, I cooked this for a group, so you may want to half the recipe if you don’t need so many. This makes 8-10 burgers. Also, if you have time to make this in advance, it’s best if you have time to let the turkey mixture marinate in the fridge for a few hours, so the meat can really soak up all the flavor you are adding to it.
BBQ Turkey Burgers with a KICK topped with Spicy/Sweet Mayo!
For the Burgers:
- 2 Pounds Ground Turkey
- 1 Large Onion, ½ minced, ½ sliced to be caramelized
- 1 Jalapeño, diced.. if you don’t like really spicy..remove the ribs and seeds.
- 3 Tablespoons BBQ Sauce
- 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
- 1½ Tablespoons Steak or BBQ seasoning, whatever you have is fine.
- Olive Oil, for cooking
- Sliced Provolone
- 1 Bunch Cilantro
- 10 Buns
For the Sauce:
- 1 Cup Mayonnaise
- 1/3 Cup Coarse Ground Mustard
- 1/4 Cup Honey
- 1 Tablespoon Prepared Horseradish
- Tabasco, as much, or little as you like 🙂
- Salt/Pepper, to taste
In a skillet, add a little bit of olive oil and turn onto medium-high heat. Add 1/2 onion that you sliced and cook for 5-10 minutes, until translucent and tender. Once they become tender, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook for an addition 15-20, stirring occasionally, until they are nice and brown in color.
For the Sauce:
In a bowl, combine all ingredients, stir well, add the amount of hot sauce that is good for you. set in the fridge until you are ready to construct your burgers!
For the Burger:
Now, in a large bowl add ground turkey and mix in onions and jalapeño. In a separate bowl, whisk together BBQ sauce, Worcestershire, seasoning.. then combine with ground turkey mixture. Roll meat into 8-10 equal sized balls, depending on how big you want them… I wouldn’t go too big, remember this is poultry, you want it to get done all the way through.
In a skillet, add olive oil and turn onto medium heat. Add 3 balls into the pan at a time (overcrowding is not nice!) and allow to cook for a few minutes, then squish the meat into patties. Continue cooking, about 6-8 minutes on each side, or until a they have a nice brown. Right at the end top with provolone and let melt.
In the oven, or on a griddle.. toast the buns. Once buns are toasted, spread both sides with the Sweet/Spicy Mayo you made. Then add turkey patties topped with cheese. To that, top with a portion of the caramelized onions and as much, or little cilantro as you like. (A lot for me!!) Serve with Fries (I have the recipe coming up next for some yummy Baked Sweet Potato Fries) Or your favorite sides! And Enjoy!
